Dear colleagues, partners, and community members:
It is with great commitment and enthusiasm that I introduce Equ Healthcare—a company dedicated to improving healthcare delivery for the Hispanic/Latino community through culturally tailored, transparent Artificial Intelligence (AI) solutions. Our mission arises from the urgent need to address health disparities that disproportionately affect the Hispanic/Latino community in the United States.
As a Mexican who has lived abroad for the past decade, I have witnessed firsthand the challenges our community faces in accessing quality healthcare. These experiences have deepened my commitment to creating technological solutions that bridge cultural gaps and ensure equitable healthcare through innovative AI technologies.
The Meaning Behind "Equ"
The name "Equ" embodies our core principles: Equation, Equity, and Equilibrium.
- Equation: Represents our commitment to leveraging advanced mathematical models and AI to solve complex healthcare challenges.
- Equity: Underscores our dedication to providing fair and culturally sensitive healthcare solutions to the Hispanic/Latino community.
- Equilibrium: Reflects our goal of achieving balance in human health by addressing disparities and promoting wellness.
The Problem with "Black Box" AI in Healthcare
As AI technologies become more widespread in healthcare, concerns have arisen about the use of "black box" models—complex algorithms whose decision-making processes are opaque. This lack of transparency can lead to serious issues, such as perpetuating racial biases. For example, a 2019 study[5] found that an AI algorithm used in healthcare underestimated the needs of Hispanic and Black patients, resulting in less appropriate care recommendations.
Furthermore, when patients and healthcare providers cannot understand how decisions are made by AI systems, it erodes trust in these technologies, limiting their effectiveness and adoption. A recent study[6] highlighted that lack of transparency in AI decision-making can significantly reduce clinician confidence, hindering the integration of AI tools in healthcare today.
There is an urgent need for healthcare solutions that are not only advanced but also culturally sensitive and accessible. Traditional healthcare models often fail to account for the unique cultural, linguistic, and socioeconomic factors that influence health behaviors and outcomes in the Hispanic/Latino community. This gap needs innovative technological approaches that can bridge cultural divides and foster trust between patients, families, and healthcare providers.
The Current Healthcare Gap
The Hispanic/Latino population is the largest minority group in the United States, projected to grow from 19% to nearly 30% by 2060[1]. Despite this growth, our community continues to face significant health disparities, including:
-
Barriers to Healthcare Access: Language barriers, socioeconomic challenges, and a lack of culturally sensitive healthcare services create significant obstacles for the Hispanic/Latino community. Many individuals face difficulty communicating with healthcare providers, leading to misunderstandings about diagnosis, treatment options, and preventive care. Financial constraints and limited health insurance coverage make accessing regular care unaffordable for many. The shortage of bilingual providers and culturally competent care further exacerbates the issue.
-
Lack of Health Education: Limited access to health education in the Hispanic/Latino community, compounded by language barriers, prevents many from understanding preventive care and managing chronic conditions. This contributes to higher rates of preventable diseases and difficulties in navigating the healthcare system effectively.
-
Higher Prevalence of Chronic Diseases: Hispanic adults are 1.7 times more likely to be diagnosed with diabetes than non-Hispanic whites[2]. Obesity rates are also higher, contributing to increased risks of hypertension and heart disease.
-
Mental Health Disparities: Only 35% of Hispanic/Latino adults with mental health issues receive treatment each year, compared to the U.S. average of 43%[3]. Cultural stigma and lack of access to culturally competent care contribute to this gap.
-
Underrepresentation in Clinical Trials: Despite comprising nearly 19% of the U.S. population, Hispanic/Latinos account for only 11% of participants in clinical trials[8]. This lack of engagement is driven by multiple factors, including mistrust of the healthcare system, language barriers, fear of immigration enforcement, and logistical challenges such as transportation and time off work. Without sufficient representation in clinical research, treatments and medications may not fully address the specific health needs of the Hispanic/Latino population.
These disparities not only affect individual well-being but also impose a significant economic burden on families, communities, and the healthcare system. The estimated economic cost of health disparities in the U.S. was approximately $93 billion in excess medical care costs and $42 billion in lost productivity per year[4].

Why I Founded Equ Healthcare
My journey in founding Equ Healthcare started from a unique combination of professional expertise and personal experience. With over a decade of experience in health and artificial intelligence, coupled with my work as a researcher at MIT’s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL), I have witnessed firsthand the transformative potential of AI and computing.
Guided by the expertise of my colleagues at the Understanding the World Through Code expeditions project supported by the National Science Foundation—I have learned and adopted the foundational principles of neuro-symbolic programming. This knowledge has been instrumental in charting the technical foundation of Equ Healthcare, ensuring we remain at the forefront of AI innovation in healthcare.
The Future
Equ Healthcare stands at the forefront of a new era in AI for healthcare—one where technology and empathy converge to serve the needs of a diverse population. By setting new standards for transparency and fairness in neuro-symbolic AI technology, we can create systems that uphold integrity and equity in healthcare decision-making. Let us build a future where equitable healthcare is a reality for all—one equation at a time.
Without intentional action, health disparities are projected to widen as the Hispanic/Latino and other minorities grow in the United States. However, by leveraging transparent neuro-symbolic AI and fostering collaborations across sectors, cultures, and ethnicities, we have the opportunity to change this trajectory for the better.
With sincere gratitude and hope that you join us on this journey,
Dr. Omar Costilla-Reyes
Founder & CEO, Equ Healthcare
